Design by Breaking Patterns
Symmetry and order is one of the things human naturally find beautiful, especially in architecture. This is because with these elements in place, aesthetically pleasing patterns form in the space.
But in 2016, the demand for interiors or building designs that stand out among the crowd is ever increasing. There are 2 common approaches to this;
One method is to swap out conventional building materials, the most common example is the use of full height glass panels as walls in exterior and interiors of buildings as opposed to using standard brick, cement and concrete. Other notable examples include embracing the use of green materials and recycled materials.
…and the other method would be on the context of design itself. One of the elements that catches the attention of people is breaking a pattern. Even a slight discord in a symmetrical structure would catch some eye balls! Dont you think?
So how do we apply this in interior design or home renovations?
There are way too many methods to achieve such an effect, some more complex than the others, however lets just show an example where a pattern is broken in 4 dimensions or aspects.
Image below is a wall design that you could install anywhere in your home. Notice that its design features the use of;
a) differing materials,
b) differing colours
c) differing texture
d) finally disordered placements
…mashed together in harmony, creating a broken pattern which is yet uniquely beautiful, and the very least, stands out!
What other techniques do you know for achieving a similar effect?
