Future Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is defined as the art and practice of designing the outdoor environment, especially designing parks or gardens together with buildings and roads.

It is a term that would surface more in coming years as people all around the world begins to realise the importance of nature, greenery, trees and parks within the stressful steel and concrete jungle they live in.

Not only does these natural elements help balance the lifestyle of modern population, the abundant trees and plants also helps generate a lot more of needed oxygen that contributes in maintaining healthy and liveable air levels.

Ever wondered what form future landscape architecture will take?

Recently there was a competition held by EVolo 2016 Skyscraper competition and its first place was won by architects Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu.

Their vision of landscape architecture project, named "The new Horizon" uses an incredibly novel horizontal approach in order to provide a maximum of space.

The “skyscraper” would surround the perimeter of a newly sunken Central Park and provide an enormous amount of housing while protecting views and accessibility to the park.

Their proposal is a hybrid multi-functional mega structure. Not by building up like most conventional construction mega projects, but by digging downward, this would reveal the bedrock (mountain) that was naturally hidden under Central Park, and it creates space along the new cliff.

Their vision is to reverse the traditional relationship between landscape and architecture, in a way that every occupiable space has direct connection to the nature.

The soil removed from the original park is planned to be shifted to various neighbourhoods, which will then be transitioned into the new mega-structure.

This creates a new urban (perhaps even futuristic) condition, where landscape can serve as an inherent part of the city.

Finally, with its highly reflective glass cover on all sides, the landscape inside the new park can reach beyond physical boundaries, creating an illusion of infinity.

Hopefully this gives more ideas to Malaysian architects and landscape designers to start transforming our cities into beautiful havens too!
