Wall Lights

Lightings on the Wall – Is It Really Necessary?

Wall Lights Malaysia

Picture this – you are getting dressed for a fancy party. You put on a stylish outfit, spritz your signature scent, and done! However, you realise that you need to add an extra touch to stand out. Ah, of course – accessories. Put on your finest jewellery and that shall complete it.

Believe it or not, this same theory also applies to the interior or exterior setting of a home, office and commercial space (well, kinda). The thing that makes an ideally constructed and furnished place more prominent is the choice of wall lights. I guess you could say that wall lights are considered as “accessories” for interior designing.

Are wall lights really important? Or are they merely reasons to enhance a space?

Wall lights serve numerous purposes and one of it is functionality. Known to be more important than overall illumination of a space, wall lights help reflect the perceived size of an interior or exterior while effectively setting the mood and a sense of personal style. The positioning of wall lights is also crucial because it has to blend well with the room size, furniture, amount of natural lighting, and more.

The three types of lighting:

  1. Ambient Lighting (or general lighting) - This is usually not very bright therefore it transmits light at the most pleasing level that suits the eye, allowing you to see comfortably.
  2. Accent Lighting - Creates a dramatic effect, highlighting focal items such as paintings, artistic objects, plants, and wall textures, amongst others.
  3. Task Lighting - Suitable for daily tasks such as reading, cooking, working, and so on.

An Optical Illusion

Ever wondered how small-scaled homes, offices and commercial spaces look spacious? The secret ingredient here is wall lights. It is common knowledge that lighting creates an illusion of space. Dim lightings make a room seem smaller whereas the bright ones make a room look bigger.

Lightings also work in two ways - by spreading light throughout the entire space or focusing on very specific details. There is positional lighting that is adjustable and can be pointed at your desired focal point. There is also recessed lighting, if your aim is to accentuate the top (ceiling) and bottom (floor).

Making a Statement

Apart from providing necessary brightness, wall lights play a part in minimalist interior design. Despite its minimalistic appearance, wall lights make focal points more eye-arresting. For example, installing a wall light fixture that draws attention to a beautiful potted hydrangea shows that the designer has a soft spot for nature and beauty. For a more classic touch, point the wall light towards to an artistic sculpture. That shall do the trick.

Accomplishing a Well-Integrated Design

As mentioned, wall lights are considered as “accessories” of an interior or exterior setting. So, it should not be a surprise that they are capable of unifying the overall design of a space. No matter the theme you are steering towards to - be it vintage, modern, or raw, simple yet stylishly modern choices of wall lights will complete the space.

That Outstanding Lighting Effect

If furniture and decor is not enough to create an ideal ambient based on your desired interior theme, leave it to wall lights to do the job. Wall lights or spotlights are usually used to direct its beam to selected focal points. For example, transmitting light to emphasise a wall art or bringing focus towards a rare kitchen counter design. If there is anything that Urban Homes taught us, it is “Consider the style of lighting you want to ensure you get the best directional or luminescent type for the setting”.
